How to Teach TW Blend Words

'Tw' is a small set, and almost every word in it relates to the number two - twin, twice, twelve, twenty, twist. Pointing that out gives a child a reason the words look alike, which is more memorable than treating them as an arbitrary list.

The catch is 'two' itself, where the w is silent. It is one of the most common words in English and a child will meet it constantly, so teach it as a sight word early and treat the rest of the blend as the regular pattern.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Trying to pronounce the w in 'two'
  • Dropping the w and reading 'twin' as 'tin'
  • Confusing 'tw' with 'th' at a glance
