SW Blend: Word List & Practice

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • I swam swift in a sweater.
  • Flip the switch.

How to Teach SW Blend Words

'Sw' only appears at the start of words. The one thing to flag is 'sword,' where the w is silent - it is pronounced 'sord.' That is a genuine exception rather than a pattern, so name it as one odd word instead of letting a child conclude the blend is unreliable.

'Swim,' 'swing,' and 'sweet' are high-frequency and physically actable. For a child who loses focus during word lists, having them do the action while reading the word keeps attention on the page longer than a seated drill does.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Trying to pronounce the w in 'sword'
  • Dropping the w and reading 'swim' as 'sim'
  • Confusing 'sw' with 'st' at a glance
