How to Teach SP Blend Words
'Sp' works exactly like 'st': two sounds, both audible, said quickly. It also appears at the end of words, though less often - 'wasp,' 'gasp,' 'crisp.' Children who have already mastered 'st' usually pick this up in a single session, so it is a good one to pair with 'st' rather than teach separately.
Watch for the p sound getting swallowed. In casual speech the p in 'sp' is unaspirated, meaning it comes out softer than the p in 'pig,' and some children hear it as a b. If your child writes 'sbin' for 'spin,' their ear is working correctly and the spelling convention is what needs teaching.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing b for the p sound, as in 'sbin' for 'spin'
- Inserting a vowel, saying 'suh-pin'
- Missing 'sp' at the end of words like 'crisp'
