How to Teach AI Vowel Team Words
'Ai' is the clearest example of the rule most children learn as 'two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking' - the a says its own name and the i stays silent. It is one of the more reliable vowel teams in English, which is why it is usually taught first, and it gives a child an early win after the messiness of short vowels.
The important limitation to teach alongside it: 'ai' almost never appears at the end of a word. English uses 'ay' there instead, which is why it is 'rain' but 'play.' If your child writes 'plai,' they have understood the sound correctly and only missed the position rule, so praise the sound and correct the placement rather than treating it as a spelling failure.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Sounding out both letters as 'ah-ee' instead of one long A
- Writing 'ai' at the end of a word where 'ay' belongs
- Confusing 'ai' with 'ea', since both can make a long vowel sound
