How to Teach EE Vowel Team Words
'Ee' is the most dependable vowel team in English. It says long E essentially every time, with no meaningful exceptions a young reader will encounter, which makes it an excellent confidence builder right after the short vowels. If a child is discouraged by how irregular English feels, this is a good pattern to spend a week on.
It also combines readily with digraphs and blends the child already knows - 'sheep' needs 'sh' plus 'ee' plus 'p,' 'street' needs 'str' plus 'ee' plus 't.' Once 'ee' is solid, use it as the vowel in blending practice so the child is only juggling one new element at a time.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading 'ee' as two separate short E sounds
- Confusing 'ee' with 'ea', which shares the sound but is far less predictable
- Dropping one e when spelling, writing 'sen' for 'seen'
