IE Vowel Team: Word List & Practice
IE Vowel Team words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 14 grade 1–2-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is applying the long I sound to middle-of-word 'ie' words like 'field'.

How to Teach IE Vowel Team Words
'Ie' has two jobs and they split fairly cleanly by position. At the end of a short word it says long I ('pie,' 'tie,' 'cried'). In the middle of a word it usually says long E ('field,' 'chief,' 'piece'). Teaching the two groups as separate word sets, rather than as one confusing team, keeps a child from feeling the pattern is arbitrary.
This is also the pattern behind the old 'i before e except after c' rhyme, which is worth mentioning but not leaning on - it has enough exceptions that it misleads as often as it helps. A child who has practiced the two positional groups will decode these words more reliably than one relying on the rhyme.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Applying the long I sound to middle-of-word 'ie' words like 'field'
- Reading 'ie' as two separate vowel sounds
- Over-applying the 'i before e' rhyme to words where it does not hold
