How to Teach OE Vowel Team Words
'Oe' is a small team - there are not many words - but it fills a specific gap: it is one of the ways English spells long O at the end of a word, where 'oa' cannot go. Because the set is short, it is realistic to simply learn the handful of words rather than drill a rule.
Watch for 'does,' which looks like it belongs here and does not - it is pronounced /duz/ and is a high-frequency sight word. Point that out as an exception the first time it appears rather than letting a child repeatedly try to decode it with the long O sound.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Trying to decode 'does' with the long O sound
- Confusing 'oe' with 'oa' when spelling end-of-word long O
- Reading the e as a separate syllable
