OW Vowel Team: Word List & Practice

OW Vowel Team words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 15 grade 1–2-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is reading every 'ow' as the /ow/ in 'cow', so 'snow' becomes /snau/.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • The brown cow is in town now.
  • Snow will grow slow.
  • Show me how the clown sat down.
  • I know the yellow crown.

How to Teach OW Vowel Team Words

'Ow' is the other two-sound team, and it splits between the /ow/ in 'cow' and the long O in 'snow.' Unlike 'oo,' there is a weak positional tendency worth knowing: 'ow' at the end of a word more often says long O ('snow,' 'grow,' 'yellow'), while 'ow' in the middle more often says /ow/ ('down,' 'brown'). It is a tendency, not a rule, but it gives a child a sensible first guess.

Rhyming pairs make the ambiguity concrete rather than confusing. Put 'cow' and 'snow' side by side, or 'now' and 'know,' and have your child read both aloud. Seeing that identical letters can behave differently, in a controlled pair rather than mid-sentence, takes the surprise out of it.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Reading every 'ow' as the /ow/ in 'cow', so 'snow' becomes /snau/
  • Not flexing to the second sound when the word does not make sense
  • Confusing 'ow' with 'ou', which shares the /ow/ sound
