How to Teach OU Vowel Team Words
'Ou' most often makes the /ow/ sound - the noise you make when you stub a toe - which is a useful hook because children remember it physically. 'Out,' 'loud,' 'house,' and 'shout' all follow it, and that covers the large majority of 'ou' words a beginning reader meets.
It shares that sound with 'ow,' which creates a spelling problem rather than a reading one: a child who hears /ow/ has to choose between two spellings. The rough guide is that 'ou' sits inside a word and 'ow' finishes it, which handles 'house' versus 'cow' correctly most of the time. There are other 'ou' sounds in words like 'you,' 'soup,' and 'touch,' but those are better handled as sight words for now.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Sounding out o and u separately
- Choosing 'ow' when spelling a middle-of-word /ow/ sound
- Being thrown by irregulars like 'you' and 'touch'
