OO Vowel Team: Word List & Practice

OO Vowel Team words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 15 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is using the 'moon' sound for every 'oo' word and reading 'book' as /booke/.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Look at the good book in the room.
  • Soon we cook food by the pool.
  • The moon is cool at the zoo.
  • He took a tool made of wood.

How to Teach OO Vowel Team Words

'Oo' has two sounds and no rule tells you which is which: the long /oo/ in 'moon' and 'food,' and the short /oo/ in 'book' and 'good.' This is one of the first places a child meets genuine ambiguity in English, and how you frame it matters. Presented as a rule with exceptions it feels unfair; presented as a team with two jobs it feels manageable.

Teach flexing explicitly here. Try the 'moon' sound first, and if the result is not a real word, try the 'book' sound. Sorting activities work especially well for this pattern - two columns, moon and book at the top, and the child files each new word by ear. That is far more effective than trying to memorise which words belong to which group.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Using the 'moon' sound for every 'oo' word and reading 'book' as /booke/
  • Not attempting the second sound when the first one produces a non-word
  • Confusing 'oo' with 'ou' when spelling
