UI Vowel Team: Word List & Practice

How to Teach UI Vowel Team Words
'Ui' is a small and genuinely tricky team. In its main group it says /oo/ - 'fruit,' 'juice,' 'suit' - which is the same sound as 'ue' and 'oo,' so it is really a spelling pattern to memorise rather than a decoding rule to apply.
There is a second group where the u is silent and the i says short i: 'build,' 'built,' 'guilt,' 'guitar.' These are common enough words that a child will hit them early, and the honest framing is that the u is doing a job left over from older spellings rather than making a sound. Treat this second group as sight words and the pattern gets much less frustrating.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Trying to make the u audible in 'build' and 'guitar'
- Confusing 'ui' with 'ue' when spelling the /oo/ sound
- Sounding out both letters separately
