How to Teach OI Vowel Team Words
'Oi' is a diphthong, which means the mouth actually moves during the sound - it starts near 'oh' and glides toward 'ee.' Having a child say it slowly and feel their lips change shape makes it stick better than treating it as a single fixed sound, because the movement is the sound.
Usefully, 'oi' is reliable: it makes this one sound essentially every time, with no second job to flex to. After the ambiguity of 'oo,' 'ow,' and 'ea,' this pattern and its partner 'oy' are a relief, and they are worth teaching right after those harder teams for exactly that reason.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading 'oi' as a long O followed by a short i
- Writing 'oi' at the end of a word where 'oy' belongs
- Confusing 'oi' with 'ou'
