OY Vowel Team: Word List & Practice

OY Vowel Team words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 14 grade 1–2-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is writing 'oi' at the end of a word instead of 'oy'.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Do not annoy the loyal boy.
  • I enjoy the royal voyage.
  • Soy will not destroy it.

How to Teach OY Vowel Team Words

'Oy' is the end-of-word partner to 'oi,' exactly as 'ay' partners 'ai' and 'ow' partners 'ou.' Same sound, different position. By the time a child reaches this team they have usually met that pattern twice already, so naming it out loud - 'this is the same trick again' - turns a new item into a familiar structure.

Because 'boy,' 'toy,' and 'joy' are among the first words many children can read, this team is a good place to practice reading longer words. 'Enjoy,' 'annoy,' and 'destroy' are simply a familiar chunk with a syllable in front, which is a gentle introduction to multisyllabic decoding.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Writing 'oi' at the end of a word instead of 'oy'
  • Reading the y as a consonant
  • Missing 'oy' inside longer words such as 'employ'
