AY Vowel Team: Word List & Practice
AY Vowel Team words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 14 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is writing 'ai' at the end of a word instead of 'ay'.

Try these out loudDecodable Sentences
Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

How to Teach AY Vowel Team Words
'Ay' makes exactly the same long A sound as 'ai,' so the sound itself is not the lesson - the position is. 'Ay' lives at the end of a word or syllable, 'ai' lives in the middle. Teaching these two together as a pair, rather than weeks apart, is what makes the rule stick, because the whole point of each is where the other cannot go.
Because 'ay' words are so common in everyday speech ('day,' 'play,' 'say'), many children already recognise several by sight before they can decode them. Use that: ask which part of 'play' makes the /ay/ sound, and let them discover the team inside a word they already know rather than introducing it cold.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing 'ai' at the end of a word instead of 'ay'
- Reading the y as a separate consonant sound
- Assuming every word ending in y uses the long A sound
