SM Blend: Word List & Practice
SM Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 11 kindergarten–grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is dropping the s and reading 'small' as 'mall'.

How to Teach SM Blend Words
'Sm' is a small set and only appears at the beginning of words, which makes it one of the easier blends to master. Both sounds are continuants, meaning you can hold each one out, so this is a good blend for a child who struggles to hear the two parts - stretch it into 'ssssmmm' and the seam is obvious.
Because there are only a handful of 'sm' words, most of them common, this is a pattern a child can genuinely finish rather than sample. Reading the whole list in one sitting and knowing you have covered it is motivating in a way that endless practice is not.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Dropping the s and reading 'small' as 'mall'
- Inserting a vowel between the sounds
- Confusing 'sm' with 'sn' since both start the same way
