Consonant BlendsGrade 1

SL Blend: Word List & Practice

SL Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is dropping the l and reading 'slip' as 'sip'.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Slide down slow, then sleep.
  • Slip the slug in the slot.
  • Slam the sleeve, slice it thin.
  • A sly slug is slim.

How to Teach SL Blend Words

'Sl' blends /s/ and /l/, both sounds that are relatively easy for young children to sustain and hear clearly, which usually makes this one of the more approachable s-blends to teach. 'Slide' and 'sled' both connect to playground and winter activities that most children have real experience with, giving an easy hook into the lesson.

As with every s-blend, if your child is dropping the second consonant (saying 'sip' for 'slip'), have them practice holding the /s/ sound a beat longer than usual before releasing into the rest of the word — exaggerating the first sound briefly often makes the second consonant easier to hear and include.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Dropping the l and reading 'slip' as 'sip'
  • Confusing 'sl' with 'sw' or 'st' words
  • Rushing through and losing the second consonant sound
