ST Blend: Word List & Practice
ST Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 15 kindergarten–grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is adding a vowel between the sounds, saying 'suh-top' for 'stop'.

How to Teach ST Blend Words
'St' is one of the most useful blends to teach early because it appears at both ends of words. A child meets it at the start in 'stop' and 'star,' and at the end in 'fast,' 'nest,' and 'best.' Practising both positions in the same session prevents the common situation where a child decodes 'stop' fluently but stalls on 'best.'
Because both letters keep their sounds, the work is purely about saying them quickly enough that they feel like one motion. If your child inserts a vowel and says 'suh-top,' slow the word down, then speed it up gradually rather than correcting the vowel directly. The extra sound disappears on its own once the blend is fast enough.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Adding a vowel between the sounds, saying 'suh-top' for 'stop'
- Dropping the s and reading 'stop' as 'top'
- Missing the blend when it lands at the end of a word like 'nest'
