SK Blend: Word List & Practice

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Skip past the desk at dusk.
  • The skunk has thin skin.
  • Ask about the mask and the task.
  • I skate in the sky with skill.

How to Teach SK Blend Words

'Sk' is worth teaching alongside the spelling 'sc,' which makes the identical sound in 'scat' and 'scar.' A child does not need a rule for choosing between them at this stage; they need to know that two spellings can produce the same blend, so neither one surprises them mid-word.

End-position 'sk' is very common and often harder than the start: 'ask,' 'desk,' 'mask,' 'task.' 'Ask' in particular is a word many children reverse to 'aks,' which is a normal developmental pattern rather than a reading problem. Point at the letters in order and blend slowly, without making it a correction.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Reversing 'ask' to 'aks'
  • Not recognising that 'sc' can make the same sound
  • Dropping the k at the end of words like 'desk'
