Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • The snake will sneak in the snow.
  • Snap a snack and sniff.
  • A snug snail can snore.
  • I sneeze at the snout.

How to Teach SN Blend Words

'Sn' pairs naturally with 'sm' - same starting sound, different second letter, both nasal. Teaching them back to back and asking a child to sort words by ear into two piles builds the discrimination faster than teaching either one alone.

There is a nice hook available here: a striking number of 'sn' words involve the nose. Snout, sniff, sneeze, snore, snot. Children find this genuinely funny, and the association makes the blend memorable in a way that drilling does not.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Confusing 'sn' with 'sm'
  • Dropping the s and reading 'snap' as 'nap'
  • Inserting a vowel, saying 'suh-nap'
