TR Blend: Word List & Practice

TR Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is confusing the natural tr-to-chr sound shift with a spelling error.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • The truck will trip on the track.
  • Try to trap the trail.
  • A treat is on the tree.
  • Trust the trick, then trot.

How to Teach TR Blend Words

'Tr' is another r-blend that, like 'dr,' often shifts toward a 'ch' or 'chr'-like sound in fast natural speech — say 'truck' and 'chruck' side by side and notice the similarity. This is completely normal spoken English, and pointing at the letters while sounding words out slowly helps your child keep the spelling-sound connection clear even as their natural speech shifts the sound slightly.

'Truck,' 'train,' and 'tree' are all common vehicle and nature words that tend to be highly motivating for young readers, making this one of the more reliably engaging blends to practice. Once your child can read the whole list fluently, try a simple sorting activity: things that move (truck, train, trip) versus things that grow (tree, trail).

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Confusing the natural tr-to-chr sound shift with a spelling error
  • Dropping the r and reading 'truck' as 'tuck'
  • Confusing 'tr' with 'dr' words
