How to Teach CR Blend Words
'Cr' blends the hard /k/ sound of c with r, and like every r-blend it is common for young children to soften the r or replace it with a w-like glide while their speech sounds are still developing — this is typically a normal articulation stage rather than a reading problem. 'Crab' is an especially motivating word for this blend given how popular sea-creature vocabulary tends to be with young children.
'Crash' combines this blend with the digraph 'sh' at the end, so it is a good integrated practice word once both patterns have been taught separately. If your child struggles specifically with 'crash' but not with simpler cr-words, the breakdown is likely at the ending digraph rather than the beginning blend.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Substituting a w sound for r
- Dropping the r and reading 'crab' as 'cab'
- Confusing 'cr' with 'cl' words
