How to Teach BR Blend Words
'Br' is an r-blend, a category that tends to be harder for children than l-blends because the American English r sound involves a distinctive tongue curl that many kids are still refining well into first grade. If your child is substituting a /w/ sound for r (a very common and normal developmental pattern, saying 'bwown' for 'brown'), that usually resolves naturally with age and does not need special phonics intervention.
'Bread' and 'break' both use the 'ea' vowel team with an unexpected short-e sound rather than the more common long-e sound, so treat those two as slight exceptions until vowel teams are covered in more depth. Focus most of your practice time on the fully regular words in this list: 'brag,' 'brick,' 'bring,' and 'brown.'
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Substituting a w sound for r, saying 'bwown' for 'brown'
- Dropping the r and reading 'brag' as 'bag'
- Confusing 'br' with 'bl' words
