GR Blend: Word List & Practice
GR Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is dropping the r and reading 'grab' as 'gab'.
- grab
- grass
- green

- grin

- grip
- grand

How to Teach GR Blend Words
'Gr' blends the hard /g/ sound with r, and 'green' and 'grass' are both concrete, everyday words that connect easily to time spent outside, which makes for natural, low-pressure practice opportunities beyond a worksheet. As with all r-blends, be patient with children who soften or substitute the r sound, since full mastery of r articulation is still developing for many kids at this age.
'Great' is worth a quick note since its vowel team 'ea' makes a long-a sound here rather than the more common long-e sound found in words like 'read' — an irregular pronunciation worth flagging directly rather than expecting your child to sound it out correctly on the first try.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Dropping the r and reading 'grab' as 'gab'
- Misreading the vowel team in 'great' as a long-e sound
- Confusing 'gr' with 'gl' words
