FR Blend: Word List & Practice

FR Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is dropping the r and reading 'frog' as 'fog'.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • The frog is free and fresh.
  • My friend will fry the fruit.
  • Frost is in front, do not frown.
  • Freeze, then fright will pass.

How to Teach FR Blend Words

'Fr' blends /f/ and r, and 'frog' tends to be one of the most eagerly practiced words in this list for the same reason -og and -ig family words are popular: animals capture attention. 'From' and 'friend' are both extremely high-frequency words that will appear constantly in your child's early reading, so give them extra repetition even though 'from' in particular has a slightly less obvious vowel sound than the spelling suggests.

'Friend' is a genuinely irregular word — the 'ie' does not follow the usual vowel-team rules your child will learn later — so it is best taught as a memorized sight word rather than something to sound out from first principles. Point that out directly so your child does not get frustrated trying to apply phonics rules that do not quite apply here.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Dropping the r and reading 'frog' as 'fog'
  • Trying to sound out 'friend' with regular vowel-team rules
  • Confusing 'fr' with 'fl' words
