DR Blend: Word List & Practice
DR Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. How to Teach DR Blend Words
'Dr' is unusual among the r-blends because in fast, natural speech it often sounds closer to a 'j' or 'jr' sound than a crisp /d/ plus /r/ — say 'drum' and 'jrum' side by side and notice how similar they can sound. This is completely normal English pronunciation, not a mistake, so do not correct a child who reads it this way as long as the meaning and spelling connection stay intact.
Because that natural sound shift can confuse the spelling-to-sound connection, it helps to point at the letters while sounding out dr-words slowly during practice, reminding your child that even though it can sound like 'jr' when spoken quickly, it is always spelled with d and r together.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Confusing the natural dr-to-jr sound shift with a spelling error
- Dropping the r and reading 'drum' as 'dum'
- Confusing 'dr' with 'tr' words
