SC Blend: Word List & Practice

How to Teach SC Blend Words
'Sc' makes the same sound as 'sk' when followed by a, o, or u. Before e, i, or y the c goes soft and the pair makes an /s/ sound instead, as in 'science' and 'scene' - but those words are rare enough at this level that the practical rule is simply 'sc sounds like sk.'
'Sc' also opens the three-letter blends 'scr' in 'scream,' 'screen,' and 'scratch.' Those are a genuine step up in difficulty, so introduce them only once two-letter 'sc' is automatic, and treat 'scr' as 's' plus the already-known 'cr' rather than as a brand-new unit.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Not connecting 'sc' to the identical sound in 'sk'
- Struggling with the three-letter jump to 'scr'
- Dropping the s and reading 'scat' as 'cat'
