PL Blend: Word List & Practice

PL Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is dropping the l and reading 'plan' as 'pan'.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Plan to play with a plum.
  • Plant the plate, please.
  • The plane will plow and plot.
  • Plus, plug in the plump one.

How to Teach PL Blend Words

'Pl' blends /p/ and /l/, and 'play' is one of the most emotionally motivating words in a young child's vocabulary — most kids will happily practice reading and writing a word connected so directly to something they love doing. Use that built-in motivation as a launching point before moving through the rest of the list.

'Please' is worth a small note since the 'ea' inside it makes a long e sound rather than following a pattern your child has learned yet — treat it as a sight word for now if vowel teams have not been covered, and revisit it once the 'ea' vowel team is formally introduced.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Dropping the l and reading 'plan' as 'pan'
  • Confusing 'pl' with 'pr' words
  • Misreading the vowel team in 'please' before it has been taught
