CL Blend: Word List & Practice

CL Blend words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is dropping the l and reading 'clap' as 'cap'.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Clap and clip by the clock.
  • Clean the cloud-gray class.
  • The clown will climb and cling.
  • Close the club near the clay.

How to Teach CL Blend Words

'Cl' blends the /k/ sound of c with /l/, and it is worth noting that this is the same /k/ sound spelled with a plain c, not the 'ck' spelling your child has seen in word families — c at the start of a blend never takes the extra k. As with all blends, both sounds stay audible: a child who reads 'clap' as 'cap' is skipping the l, which is the single most common blend error at this stage.

'Climb' is worth a special note: the b at the end is completely silent, a leftover from older English spelling that did not simplify over time. Simply tell your child directly that the b is silent here rather than expecting them to discover it — a small number of English words like this are genuinely irregular and are best taught as direct exceptions.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Dropping the l and reading 'clap' as 'cap'
  • Trying to pronounce the silent b in 'climb'
  • Confusing 'cl' with 'cr' words
