How to Teach FL Blend Words
'Fl' combines /f/ and /l/, two sounds that are both made with the tongue and lips in fairly relaxed positions, which usually makes this blend a little easier for children to produce smoothly than blends involving a hard stop consonant like /b/ or /k/. Even so, watch for children who drop the l and read 'flag' as 'fag' or 'flat' as 'fat' — the fix is the same as with every blend: slow down and practice both sounds together before speeding up.
This blend includes 'fly' and 'flew,' two forms of the same irregular verb, which is a nice opportunity to point out that spelling and sound stay consistent even when grammar gets more complicated — 'fly' and 'flew' both clearly start with the fl blend even though one is present tense and one is past.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Dropping the l and reading 'flag' as 'fag' or 'flat' as 'fat'
- Confusing 'fl' with 'fr' words
- Rushing the blend and swallowing the vowel that follows
