GL Blend: Word List & Practice

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • I am glad about the glass.
  • The globe will glow and gleam.
  • Glue the glitter, then glide.
  • A glare cuts through the gloom.

How to Teach GL Blend Words

'Gl' blends /g/ and /l/, and because g can also sometimes make a soft /j/ sound in other words (as in 'giant'), it is worth confirming your child knows that g is always hard (as in 'go') at the start of a blend like this — soft g essentially never appears before a consonant. 'Glad' is a common, useful feeling word that makes an easy, motivating entry point into this blend.

Several -gl words describe light or shine ('glow,' 'gleam,' 'glitter,' 'glare'), which gives a nice opportunity for a themed practice session — talk about all the ways things can shine while practicing the words that describe it, tying vocabulary building directly to the phonics lesson.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Dropping the l and reading 'glad' as 'gad'
  • Confusing 'gl' with 'gr' words
  • Applying a soft g sound instead of the correct hard g
