How to Teach O_E Magic E Words
Long O is one of the easier long vowels for children to say, so o_e words usually go smoothly once a_e and i_e are in place. Pairs like 'hop / hope,' 'not / note' and 'rob / robe' make the change easy to hear, and words like 'home,' 'nose' and 'bone' are ones kids already say every day.
The tricky part is that a few very common words look like o_e but don't follow it. 'Come,' 'some,' 'done,' 'gone' and 'love' are the usual ones. It's worth telling your child plainly that these are exceptions to learn by sight, so they don't decide the rule is broken when they meet one in a book.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading 'hope' as 'hop' by keeping the short O
- Applying the rule to exceptions, so 'come' is read to rhyme with 'home'
- Confusing o_e with oa, which makes the same long O sound
