How to Teach U_E Magic E Words
U_e is the one magic e pattern with two sounds, and it's worth saying so up front. In 'cute,' 'cube' and 'huge' it says /yoo/, like the letter's name. In 'rule,' 'flute' and 'June' it says /oo/. Both are correct, and which one a word uses mostly depends on the sound before it, so children usually pick it up by ear once they've read a few of each.
Because u_e words are less common than a_e or i_e words, it helps to save this pattern for last and keep sessions short. If your child reads 'cut' for 'cute,' go back to a pair like 'cub / cube' and let them hear how the e changes the word before moving on.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading 'cute' as 'cut' because the e gets skipped
- Using /oo/ in a word that needs /yoo/, so 'cute' sounds like 'coot'
- Mixing up u_e with ue and ew, which make the same sounds
