How to Teach I_E Magic E Words
I_e works exactly like a_e, so once your child can read 'cake,' show them that 'kit' becomes 'kite' and 'pin' becomes 'pine' in the same way. Long I is easy to hear because it says the letter's name, and many common i_e words ('like,' 'time,' 'five,' 'ride') show up in early books, so this pattern pays off quickly.
Children who have just learned i_e sometimes start giving every i a long sound, reading 'win' as 'wine.' That's actually a good sign, because it means they're applying the rule, but it's worth practicing short and long pairs side by side ('rid / ride,' 'bit / bite,' 'fin / fine') until they check for the e every time.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading 'kite' as 'kit' because the e at the end gets skipped
- Over-applying the rule so short words like 'win' turn into 'wine'
- Pronouncing the e as an extra syllable
