NG Digraph: Word List & Practice

NG Digraph words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 12 grade 1-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is splitting 'ng' into separate n and g sounds.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • The king can sing a long song.
  • Ring the gong, hear it bang.
  • A strong wing can swing.
  • Hang the ring, then sing.

How to Teach NG Digraph Words

Like 'ck,' the digraph 'ng' is best understood after your child has already met it inside individual word families like -ang, -ing, -ong, and -ung — this entry is the chance to name the pattern explicitly and confirm it transfers across every vowel. 'Ng' makes a single nasal sound (air moving through the nose) that is genuinely different from either 'n' or 'g' said alone, which is why trying to sound it out letter by letter never quite works.

A simple physical check: have your child hold their nose lightly while saying a word like 'sing' — they should feel the sound change or get blocked, since 'ng' is a nasal sound made partly through the nose. This kind of concrete, physical demonstration often does more to cement the concept than verbal explanation alone.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Splitting 'ng' into separate n and g sounds
  • Confusing -ang, -ing, -ong, and -ung endings when reading quickly
  • Dropping the nasal quality and reading it as a plain g sound
