How to Teach -ong Word Family Words

The -ong family completes the nasal-ending set alongside -ang, -ing, and -ung, and by this point your child should recognize the pattern: vowel plus 'ng' is read as one smooth chunk, never as separate letter sounds. 'Song' and 'long' are common, easy starting points before moving to 'strong' and 'wrong,' which both add beginning blends or the silent-w pattern.

'Wrong' repeats the silent-w-before-r pattern from 'wreck' and 'wrist,' so use it as another chance to reinforce that rule by name rather than expecting your child to sound it out independently. 'Along' is a two-syllable word and a good stretch example that the -ong chunk works the same way even inside longer words.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Splitting '-ong' into separate n and g sounds
  • Attempting to pronounce the silent w in 'wrong'
  • Confusing -ong with -ang or -ing when reading quickly
