PH Digraph: Word List & Practice

PH Digraph words follow one repeating pattern, so a child who can read one of them has most of what they need to read the rest. This list has 9 grade 1–grade 2-level words plus 4 decodable sentences. Practice them out loud — the most common error is trying to sound out 'p' and 'h' as two separate sounds.

Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

How to Teach PH Digraph Words

The digraph 'ph' makes an /f/ sound and almost always shows up in words that originally came into English from Greek — 'phone,' 'photo,' 'graph,' 'alphabet,' and even the word 'phonics' itself all trace back to Greek roots. This is a nice moment to plant an early seed about word origins: telling a child 'ph makes an f sound because these words came from Greek a long time ago' gives them a memorable hook rather than an arbitrary spelling rule to memorize.

'Ph' is less frequent than 'sh,' 'ch,' 'th,' or 'wh,' so it is typically introduced a bit later, often in first or second grade once a child has a solid handle on the more common digraphs. Because it always makes the same /f/ sound as the letter f, some children find it easier to grasp than digraphs that make an entirely new sound, once they know to expect it.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Trying to sound out 'p' and 'h' as two separate sounds
  • Confusing ph words with plain f-spelled words in writing
  • Not recognizing ph in the middle of longer words like 'elephant' or 'alphabet'
