How to Teach OR (Bossy R) Words
'Or' is the second clean r-controlled sound and, like 'ar,' it is mostly unambiguous. Teaching 'ar' and 'or' together as the two distinct ones, before the three that sound alike, gives a child two solid wins and a clear sense that this family is learnable.
One wrinkle: after a w, 'or' often shifts to sound like 'er' - 'work,' 'word,' 'world,' 'worm.' Those are common words, so flag them as a small group where the w changes things, rather than leaving a child to wonder why 'word' does not rhyme with 'ford.'
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Reading 'work' and 'word' with the 'or' sound
- Confusing 'or' with 'ar'
- Separating the o and r into two sounds
