Decodable Sentences

Every word in these sentences uses sounds your child has already learned, so they can be read by decoding rather than guessing.

  • Dash to wash the cash.
  • The crash made a big splash.
  • Mash the trash with a flash.
  • Do not smash the sash.

How to Teach -ash Word Family Words

The -ash family combines a short vowel rime with the digraph 'sh,' so it is best taught after your child already recognizes 'sh' as a single sound on its own — otherwise they may try to sound out an 's' and an 'h' separately at the end of the word. Once 'sh' is solid, -ash behaves like any other rime family: swap the beginning sound and the rest stays constant.

This family is unusually rich in blend words — 'trash,' 'flash,' 'crash,' 'smash,' 'splash,' and 'stash' all start with two or three consonants — which makes it excellent practice for children who have already mastered simpler families and are ready for a challenge. 'Splash' in particular is a three-consonant blend ('spl') and is worth celebrating as a milestone word once your child can read it smoothly.

Common Mistakes to Watch For

  • Sounding out 's' and 'h' separately instead of reading 'sh' as one unit
  • Dropping consonants in longer blends like 'splash' or 'smash'
  • Confusing -ash with -esh or -ish when reading quickly
