How to Teach -and Word Family Words
The -and family is a step up in complexity because it ends in a two-consonant blend ('nd') rather than a single consonant, which means a child has to hold onto three separate sounds after the vowel before reaching the end of the word. Since 'and' is also one of the most frequent words in the English language, it is worth teaching this family fairly early even though it is technically harder than a plain CVC rime.
Practice the ending blend in isolation first: say '-and' by itself several times, exaggerating the /n/ and /d/ as two distinct closing sounds, before attaching a beginning consonant. Words like 'stand,' 'brand,' and 'grand' then add a beginning blend on top of the ending blend, so save those for once 'band,' 'hand,' 'land,' and 'sand' are automatic.
Common Mistakes to Watch For
- Dropping the final /d/ sound and reading 'and' as 'an'
- Struggling to blend three consonants in words like 'stand' or 'brand'
- Reading 'and' correctly in isolation but stumbling when it starts a longer word
